Shortly after The Lost World hit the cinemas there was a plan born to clone a wooly mammoth. Scientists have found various mammoths completely preserved in ice. One of the major inherent barriers was being able to successfully extract DNA from a tissue that has been in a deep freeze – mainly because ice crystals destroy sections of the cell. Recently breakthroughs have been made and researchers feel ready to start the process of taking the nuclei from a mammoth and planting it inside an elephant egg from which the nuclei has been removed.  Who knows – we may be going to South Dakota to a mammoth reservation and at the end of the tour be able to chow down on a tasty mammoth burger in 10 years?
